Phyllis Gretzky Tribute. December 19, 2005

Update: Dec. 19, 2005

Sadly, the First Lady of Canadian Hockey passed away in Brantford on Monday Dec 19, 2005 at 10:00 pm. She was surrounded by the family whom referred to her as their "glue". She will be sorely missed. Please join me in extending the hockey worlds' sympathies to Wayne and the entire Gretzky family. The image below is from the solemn funeral service held in Brantford. (Click on the image for more links).

Most people will tell you that it is Phyliss who Wayne is most like. She is the one with the easy going personality that we see in Number 99. Certainly their smiles are akin to sunbeams.

(Dec 17).

Wayne has stepped down as Coach of the Coyotes in order to spend time with his ailing mom who is fighting lung cancer. I know everyone joins me in a prayer for Phyllis and of course the entire Gretzky family.

GRETZKY: Move Over Bobby Orr, Here Comes GRETZKY

Another press milestone for Wayne Gretzky was when he earned a chapter in a Hockey Book. The photo above is the first of the 3 pages he was designated. The author was especially prophetic in naming the Chapter: Move Over Bobby Orr, Here Comes GRETZKY.

The photo above is from a ProStars baseball tournament and Wayne is actually getting an autograph from Bobby Orr.

GRETZKY : The BIG League's.

In this section I am just giving the reader an opportunity to follow Wayne's professional career in brief. Elsewhere I have provided links to an in-depth look at the Great One. Scroll images for Links to brief overviews of each team.

The Great Years in Edmonton On Wayne's 18th birthday he signed a long term personal services contract with the Edmonton Oilers and proceeded to become a fan favorite everywhere. Clicking on the image above will take you to a profile of his Oiler's days. Clicking on the image below will take you to Pt.1 of a three part interview with Wayne.

Here he is with his famous hockey dad Walter.

This has to be one of my all time favorite's of Gretzky. I have always considered him a dancer, a Ballerina on ice. A Baryshkanov on skates if you will.

Gretzky Collector's Or Poster Fans for Bad Behaviour? (July 6, 2003)If there is one thing I have observed as a hobbyist who often sells items from my Wayne Gretzky collection, it is how most of 99's "item worshippers", are his complete antithesis. In a world that rarely has any new shock value for me, at first, this defied even my logic??

GRETZKY: HIS FIRST PRESS COVERAGE

tel.JPG
No. 9 with big No. 9 aspirations.
By JOHN IABONI...Toronto Telegram

My first significant press coverage took place in Brantford at the rink. The reporter John Iaboni, came to watch me play a hockey game and then wrote the following Story. It was published in the Toronto Telegram October 28, 1971. Once again I was very lucky because the Telegram Newspaper actually folded on or close to October 30th, 1971. If it had folded a couple of days sooner, it is unlikely my story would ever have been told.
